Thinking of Moving Off-Campus?

If you are one of the many MU students considering moving off campus, make sure to check out the Wellness Resource Center's "Off-Campus Living Guide". This is a comprehensive resource of everything you need to know about living away from the University, from your rights and liabilities as a renter, to how to deal with stress, and much more. According to Student Legal Services Director Steve Concannon, MU students frequently encounter legal issues when living off campus, many of which could be easily prevented by knowing your rights as a tenant. Check out the guide at:

UM-System Student Curator. Who is she? What does she do?

Laura A. Confer was appointed student representative to the University of Missouri Board of Curators by Gov. Jay Nixon June 1, 2009, for a term ending January 1, 2010.

Representative Confer is an ex-officio member of the Academic, Student and External Affairs Committee of the Board of Curators. Ms. Confer is a junior at Missouri University of Science and Technology majoring in mechanical engineering. She is a Missouri S&T PRO-Leader and a Campus Service Officer. She has served with Women As Global Leaders, as Governor of the Residential College Association and as vice president of Phi Eta Sigma.

Ms. Confer's role is to provide students with a voice on this most important governing body of our University of Missouri-System. The Student Curator is allowed to attend all Curator meetings, including sessions, but does not have a vote on any issues. Though the Student Curator can serve as an advocate he/she cannot make a direct impact on policy at MU, UMKC, UMSL or MO-S&T. ASUM feels that this is unfair since student tuition is the major source of funding for the university, and this issue has been a focus of our lobbying efforts for nearly two decades. If you have questions or an issue for the Student Curator to advocate, she can be contacted via email:

What is the most effective method for contacting my elected officials?

Though e-mail is by far the timeliest method of communication, it has also proven to be the least effective. Oftentimes, emails concerning a "hot topic" get deleted or dismissed as junk mail. Instead, ASUM suggests writing your elected officials a letter, or giving her office a call. Phone numbers and addresses are available on most government websites, and a high volume of calls or letters from constituents will get an elected officials attention. During the legislative session (January-May) , ASUM will gladly hand deliver a letter to your State Legislator’s office. To look up your state legislator:

http://www.senate.mo.gov/llookup/leg_lookup.aspx

*please note that you will need to know the additional 4 digits of your zip code to accurately determine your legislators.

For U.S. Senate: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

For U.S. House: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
